“Bestiarium” was published in 1987 and represents one of Flor Garduño’s early significant works in her photographic career. It’s now considered part of her “Trilogy” collection alongside “Fantastic Women” and “Silent Natures.”
The book features black and white photographs that focus on the relationship between animals and humans, particularly in indigenous Mexican contexts. In the “Bestiarium” series, Garduño presents images of indigenous people of Mexico with animals that serve as symbolic attributes in the photographs.
The book was first shown in an exhibition at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Mexico City in 1988, and has since been included in many international exhibitions of her work.
