The photographs of Flor Garduño create a bridge between worlds – the sacred and the quotidian, the body and the spirit – allowing us glimpses, in the words of Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, of “a moving portrait of eternity.” Her early apprenticeship with Manuel Álvarez Bravo provided a model for imaging historical realities through a language of symbols. A mini-retrospective of her black-and-white photographs is on view at Throckmorton Fine Art through February 25.

Flor Garduño’s Mythical Nature

Flor Garduño’s “Trilogy” divides work from 30 years of her career into categories she calls “Bestiarium,” “Silent Natures” and “Fantastic Women,” which blur the boundaries between nature and myth, body and dream. Incorporating plants in her studies of nude women or exploring the spiritual connection between people and real or fictional animals, Garduño suggests universal powers rooted in nature. Almost 100 images from “Trilogy” make up a retrospective of her work on view at the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego until May 29.

She, the visual composer of her introspections, relinquishes them only to the notion that she is, first and foremost, a renowned artist whose desire to share her craft with others is what most purveyors of her ilk do; however, the world of photographer Flor Garduno exists solely on the premise of her willingness to open her eyes and capture those dreamscapes of her imagination, so that others may see what she sees and breathes.

Trayectoria de la fotógrafa Flor Garduño en el ex convento de Tepoztlán.

El pasado sábado 13 de febrero se llevó a cabo la plática sobre la obra y trayectoria de Flor Garduño reconocida fotógrafa Mexicana amiga de Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Arnold Belkin y asistente de Manuel Álvarez Bravo entre otros reconocidos personajes de la cultura de la época.

La presentación estuvo a cargo del fotógrafo Ricardo Vinos, la investigadora y curadora Emma Cecilia García Krinsky y la escritora, novelista y poeta Sandra Laura Cisneros, dicha plática contó con la presencia de Flor Garduño. Los expositores disertaron sobre la obra de Flor, su trayectoria como artista y sobre como la experiencia de vida de la fotógrafa fue un pilar fundamental para la creación de su reconocida obra fotográfica.

El mundo blanco y negro de Flor Garduño

Flor Garduño, la prestigiosa fotógrafa mexicana, tiene un secreto: la fotografía no fue su primer amor.

“Me gustaba mucho dibujar”, recuerda en su casa en la Ciudad de México. “Y siempre tuve el sueño de convertirme en una pintora”.

Pero mientras estudiaba en la Academia de San Carlos en 1977, Garduño conoció a dos maestros de la fotografía que cambiaron su vida. La primera fue Kati Horna (1912-2000), la fotógrafa de guerra húngara que también exploró el surrealismo, el feminismo y la lucha de clases en México. Horna se convirtió en su mentora y le enseñó a explorar temas y movimientos sociales o, en sus palabras, “las visiones con las que todavía estoy trabajando”.

Luego conoció al mexicano Manuel Álvarez Bravo.

Flor Garduño’s Vision in Black-and-White

Flor Garduño, the celebrated Mexican photographer, had a confession: Photography was not her first love.

“I used to draw a lot,” she said from her home in Mexico City, “and always had the dream of becoming a painter.”

Instead, while studying at the San Carlos School of Fine Art in 1977, Ms. Garduño met two masters of photography who would change her life. Kati Horna (1912-2000), the Hungarian war photographer who explored surrealism, feminism and class in Mexico, became Ms. Garduño’s mentor, teaching her how to explore issues and themes, or “the visions with which I am still working.”

Then there was Manuel Álvarez Bravo.

Exhibition at Throckmorton Fine Art presents works by nine Mexican women photographers

NEW YORK, NY.- Throckmorton Fine Art is staging an important show of Mexican Photography by nine of the most acclaimed women photographers at its New York gallery at 145 East 57 Street from Sept 24 through Nov 14.

In the preface to the catalog for WOMEN PIONEERS - MEXICAN Photography I Spencer Throckmorton says, “To my knowledge there never before has been such an exhibit. The women whose work is shown here are all pioneers, crashing through the barriers imposed by a male-dominated society and culture. They took the initiative; they took the risks. I have to believe that their determination, their zeal and their fearlessness shaped their images of what they saw and what they photographed.

Pioneering Female Photographers in Mexico

Can you imagine what it was like to be a “woman photographer” in the early 20th century? Not easy. Sexism ran rampant, even in the creative class. But in Mexico, the end of the revolution of 1910-20 ushered in a period of new artistic freedom, and intrepid female artists seized the moment. They took their cameras to the streets, challenging mores and conventions, playing with forms of expression and creating images that influenced the art of future generations. In a country where women didn’t fully win the right to vote until 1953, this was quite the feat.

Looking In, Looking Out: Latin American Photography

Selected from the permanent collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA), the 47 works in Looking In, Looking Out: Latin American Photography explore various aspects of Latin American history and culture. Representing works produced after the 1930s by artists and photographers living and working in Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, and other nations, the exhibition highlights the wide-ranging landscapes of these regions, while also documenting many of the societal changes that have occurred from the 1930s to the present. This also is the final exhibition that Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photography, organized before her passing on July 28. The photographs featured in the exhibition serve not as a comprehensive or definitive examination, but as selective and intimate introductions to Latin American points of view, revealing commonalities as well as diversities in cultural identity and daily life.

Exhibition of Mexican Photographer Flor Garduno Opens in Moscow

Gallery of Classical Photography in Moscow has been opened the Exhibition Dreams and Metaphors of the well-known Mexican photographer Flor Garduño.

The exposition presents over 70 works by her that have become world-famous. The Mexican photo artist takes pictures of women and, apparently, for women. She seeks for natural beauty — her models have nothing to do with glossy beauties perfected in Photoshop to please men’s eyes. Women as seen and shown by Flor Garduno are children of nature with a wise look, plump thighs, ripe breasts, and hot aura.

Quite often they are surrounded with flowers or fruit — they are as fine and natural as fresh lilies or juicy lemons. And the black-and-white film deepens the impression of documentary shooting and authenticity of nature.

The exposition presents over 70 works by her that have become world-famous. The Mexican photo artist takes pictures of women and, apparently, for women. She seeks for natural beauty — her models have nothing to do with glossy beauties perfected in Photoshop to please men’s eyes. Women as seen and shown by Flor Garduno are children of nature with a wise look, plump thighs, ripe breasts, and hot aura.

The Gallery of Classic Photography presents the exhibition Dreams and Metaphors by mexican photographer Flor Garduño. This is more than 70 works from her most famous projects The Inner Light and Witnesses of Time –deep and expressive images, studies of people, emotions and characters, surprisingly subtly noted by the watchful eye of the artist. All the photos are black and white and made in natural light. Opens on October 10.

Double Exposure / Doble Exposición: Rostros de la Ruptura

El Museo Arocena y la Colección FEMSA tienen el honor de invitarle a la apertura de la exhibición Double Exposure / Doble Exposición, una muestra de fotografía contemporánea realizada en colaboración con la reconocida Colección FEMSA.

Rostros de la Ruptura plantea un tema eterno para el arte: la idea del retrato como un reflejo del alma. En las imágenes se percibe tanto al retratado como la presencia implícita del que retrata, es el encuentro de dos fuerzas creativas: una doble exposición.

Estamos seguros que los rostros aquí retratados evocarán el espíritu de una época que se atrevió a disentir, a proponer y a construir una nueva forma de pensar y hacer arte.

"América originaria" nace de una selección de dos de sus títulos: "Testigos del tiempo" (premiado en Europa y Estados Unidos y con más de veinte exhibiciones individuales en museos y galerías del mundo entero) y "Mesteños". Garduño busca a los pobladores originales de América, de la Patagonia a Alaska, de la Tierra del Fuego a los Territorios del Yukón, con una mirada a los pueblos indios alejada de la complacencia o el sentimiento de superioridad. The profile of Mexican photography has been raised considerably by the recent sale of Tina Modotti's 1925 photograph Roses for an unprecedented dollars 165,000. Though Italian-born and raised in California, Modotti's astonishing photographic output grew out of her experiences in her adopted country, Mexico, where she was apprenticed to the great photographer (and Modotti's lover) Edward Weston. One of Modotti's greatest admirers was the young Mexican photographer Manuel Alvarez Bravo - who went on to achieve international acclaim. And now it's the turn of his apprentice, Flor Garduno, who celebrates her first British exhibition, 'Witnesses of Time' at the National Museum of Photography. Carrying the Mexican torch, Flor Garduno has taken pictures of her native Latin America on her travels through the more remote regions of Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, focusing on the culture, landscape, architecture and religious ceremonies of some of the 40 million indians living in the continent. In search of an expression for this indigenous culture's fight for survival, she has produced a surreal body of work where lone figures inhabit strange landscapes and haunted, or masked, faces stare out from stark portraits. What emerges is a world of the dispossessed, obscured through the years by the European invasion. The rigours of daily rural life are seen to be alleviated by overwhelming religious and mystic beliefs which dominate the lives of this American people. In Garduno's stunning body of black-and-white photography, Tina Modotti's influence both endures and ends. Here is Modotti's mastery of the subtle nuances of light and shade, together with the kind of exquisite composition learnt from Edward Weston and continued in the work of Alvarez Bravo. But there the similarity ends. For Flor Garduno's photographs are as magical and other-worldly as Modotti's are grounded in an unshakeable realism. Where Modotti was committed to a political form of artistic expression, Garduno seeks to heighten the mythical aspects of Latin American culture and does so by embuing her subjects with ethereal qualities. This could almost be a land of make-believe, in the realm of fairy-tales, where statues seem to breathe and small children turn to stone. A masked figure becomes a dog in human clothes, an old man seems to dance with a wooden statue of a saint. In an introduction to the exhibition catalogue, the Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes delivers a fitting tribute, noting 'the profiles of the only real American aristocracy; two boys who are kings of clubs . . . ancient kings, fallen princes: they have no other dominion than that of time'.
