At MOPA, Flor Garduño exudes female strength

Power of women is one of the themes in Mexican photographer’s exhibit

By Roxana Popescu

Women have long been portrayed in art as inscrutable ciphers, from the ancient Greek Kore statues with their odd, tight smiles, to the Mona Lisa, to the photography of May Ray. The photographer Flor Garduño muddles that enigmatic status, showing women both as idealized and mysterious creatures, but also as powerful and self-fulfilled beings.

THE COMPASSIONATE EYE: WOMEN BEHIND THE LENS

11/28/2015 - 12/9/2015

Shortly after the development of photography in the mid 19th century, women became early practitioners of the medium and expanded its range by experimenting with its every aspect and playing a pivotal role in its reception. Their lasting impact on photography is historically documented, but within the early stages of its development as a means of artistic expression, it often was women’s enthusiastic engagement in image making that can be attributed to the medium’s strength as a vehicle for story telling, the re-creation of personal dramas as well as the experimentation with printing out techniques.

SEMI-FINALIST/HONORABLE MENTION – INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER BOOK AWARDS 2006

A human body, fruit, a flower, a child, a fish, a horse, an old photograph photographed in the snow … in her images this Mexican artist collects lost fragments, fragments of everyday life, some melancholic, some agonizing, of her homeland, Mexico, and her reminiscences; she allows us to perceive all the sensuality and physicality of the body and facial expression, all the nostalgia for a world unavoidably becoming lost in the great shift towards approval. Hers is a language which, with the passing of time, has touched upon not so much the simplicity as the secret complexity of the subject. A language that is pure theatre.

Flor Garduño exhibe selección fotográfica en Ginebra, Suiza

By Redacción/Sinembargo — May, 2013

México, 1 May. Flor Garduño - Witnesses of Time

by Marek Grygiel

THE MEXICAN photography is much appreciated throughout the world. One of the reasons for that is the work of the most prominent figure of Mexican photography, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, who died not long ago. Well known are also achievements of a whole galaxy of excellent Mexican photographers. One of the most esteemed camera artist became Flor Garduño. Her work concentrates around recording the region in which she is involved emotionally and culturally, that is to say, the countries of South America, her native Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, Bolivia.

Her project significantly named "Testigos del Tiempo" (Witnesses of Time) was realized in the years 1983-1991. It is documentary photographic recording of the life of people living beyond great cities, devoted to their daily rhythm and customs. Her pictures contain a wealth of the sense of form. Garduño photographed life, religious celebrations and social events. All this was done while maintaining certain distance and with great emphasis put on regularity of composition and balanced framing. It is equally true when she is photographing true world of poor people from provincial regions and when her pictures present landscape, architecture, wealth of tropical nature. All this was realized using very sophisticated, sparing means with lighting and composition playing primary role.
